Why Social Science?

Paying attention to patterns of human interaction and behavior, past and present, is something we all do. But social scientists bring careful training and methodology to the study of human beings and societies, providing tools for understanding contemporary politics, relationships past and present, and the world around us. How can understanding what social scientists do make us better observers, and better citizens? These same analytical tools will also equip you to get the most out of your upper-division coursework in your major, and give you the skills to apply what you are learning to real world situations and problems. In this course, you will learn to ask questions, consider evidence, analyze data, and recognize the theories and methods that social scientists use to address a wide array of problems and topics, including the particular challenges of the sophomore year.
